"Thanks again for the opportunity for Katrina and I to help with the placement of one of the dogs rescued from Adams County.  We got the puppy/dog # 39, his name is now Bean, he has a great, loving  home and his older adoptive “collie brother” Sam loves him as much as we do.  Here’s a couple of photos of Bean at his new home.  Thanks again, and thanks to CART for assisting with the rescue."  Gerry

Hi, my name is Erica and my sister, Andrea, and I met you on Wednesday at the barn with the Adams County dogs. We drove all the way from Mason to come get dog number 55! His name is Huck and he is doing well in his new home. It took us over six hours to shave the mats off of him (which only consisted of feces). Six hours, three clipper blades and two baths later, he is looking better! His body isn't too pretty now - he is totally bald - but his face is gorgeous! He was neutered yesterday and did awesome throughout and after his surgery. Poor guy has been through so much this past week. We are working on getting over some of his quirky fears. We worked with a trainer, Ben Yancey, for about two hours today and it is amazing how quickly his behavior is turning around. He doesn't have bad behavior, just fearful of odd things. He is going to be a great dog once we get him completely healthy and his hair grown back out! He did have whipworms, so of course he is on treatment for that. Here our some pictures of him in his new home! I will be sure to send some your way once he's got some hair back. Thank you for all of your time and effort you put in to finding these dogs' homes... he is a great dog and I know he'd give you a big ol' kiss for finding him a home!  (The picture of him getting taken care of at the vets is after two hours of shaving and one bath!... it does not show how severly matted he really was).

This is Shadow (AKA #23) sleeping next to our 5 yr old Golden Retriever Chance (also a rescue he came from Rescue Me Inc, New Carlisle, Ohio).  Over the past few days Shadow has grown accustomed to his new home and has been spending his days hanging out with Chance and learning from him.  The first night was rough since Shadow who had never seen a dog treat didn't want to eat but after seeing Chance enjoying more than his fair share started to open up to food being given to him.  Shadow didn't know how to walk on a leash when he first came home but after a few days of working with him on a harness and regular collar he is doing much better to the point our 7 yr old daughter takes him for walks.  When Shadow first came home his tail was constantly down between his legs and he was confused, now he holds his tail up high and wants to play with our much larger dog Chance.  My husband who had concerns about rescue dogs has decided when/if we want a third dog to add to the group we'll be finding another rescue dog who needs a home.  Over all Shadow keeps surprising me with his attitude towards life and his willingness to learn, something that some dogs might have lost in the situation he had come from, Shadow even willingly approached a few other dogs at Petsmart on our trip today something he might not have done two days ago.  This dog has so much bounce back potential he's even started learning to sit for treats from Chance.

(#51) Gabi is great!  Vet did not find anything serious.  She looks soooo much better and feels so much better.  They actually bathed her, shaved her and bathed her again.  She seems to want to run around the yard today seeing as it's so beautiful Ive been letting her get her bearings and chill out a bit.  Luke (toddler) does stress her out when he gets going.  She is going to have to get used to that.  Overall, she has been AWESOME!  We are so happy to have her and feel so lucky.  I'll attach a pic for you! We can't thank you enough for your kindness! Caroline

Additional news:

When we welcomed Gabi into our family our first stop was the Vet's office.  She was matted beyond help and had to be shaved, her poor little paws were so tender from standing in a foot of feces she couldn't walk comfortably and she had fleas.  Beyond those things that are fixable, she was so scared; she didn't bark or wag her tail for a week or more!  She is getting more comfortable each day and becoming a great pet not just a neglected (and we suspect abused) animal.  We are so thankful to have been able to save her from such squalor and give her a great life!"

Update on dogs that went to Pets Without Parents:  all 4 dogs went into foster care on Wednesday, when we picked up.  Two of the dogs stayed with me for the first two days.  #50 - the beautiful white Lab went into the shelter yesterday for adoption.  #33 has been bathed and is in foster care; # 64 is in foster care in a different home (I haven't talked to the foster mom since Wednesday, will try to get update); #34 is still with me.

#34 has had THREE baths, extensive grooming and clipping, and is just now starting to not smell so bad - he is genuinely lovely.  All dogs have vet appointments on Monday and their neuter surgeries will be scheduled soon.  My dog (#34 - JAKE) is going to be a longer term foster because he has mange, lice and a few other things - we are probably going to have to shave him, because his fur is so bad.... and he will stay with me until he looks good.  He has been out in my yard and LOVES the straw I have put down, and is getting along well with one of my beagles - he already looks like a different dog.  He clearly was someone's pet, because he already walks well on a leash - a sweet dog.

#50 - white lab - clearly had never been in a house, had never eaten out of a bowl, had never seen grass, had never seen a cat, had never climbed stairs  - by the beginning of the 2nd day, was walking fairly well on a leash and learning to walk on various surfaces - carpets, wood floors, grass, straw - he is totally sweet and will be adopted quickly...  Amy the director named him "JACK" in the first few minutes - won't be surprised if SHE adopts him!

Christine

My name is (now) Buddy, aka:#14. It's been five days since I found my 'furever' home and I want to thank you for saving me.  I have new pal, and her name is Tigger. She's a big (to little ole me anyway) pit bull mix and is now my official big sister.

I'll let my 'Daddy' take it from here and tell ya about me.
Well, here we go.  After our drive Wednesday to the pick up point, we took Buddy to the vet and he confirmed that Buddy is infested with Demadex Mange.  The vet said he would probably need three treatments.  Luckily after the worming treatments he received on the site of the adoption place he has a clean bill of health on that front.

I was able to leash train him by the end of the day and he was on his first pack walk that night.  On Thursday we worked with him and Tigger to get him used to his new home.  We wanted for him to get a little rest and get some strength before his first dip.   He had his first dip on Friday and he was a little drained from it but he is starting to put on weight and he is not fighting over food.

He has already gotten used to the invisible fence we have and he is having a ball frolicking in the yard so much that he just does not know what to do with himself.  Tigger has been a good calming influence on him.  The only thing is the potty training is going to take some time.  He's a little peepot and goes all over the place. Also we are still working on getting him used to the dog doors we have.  He sees it as a part of a wall but once you crack the door to where he can see the ground outside he will go through.  He tries to follow on Tigger's heels through the door but his timing is still a little off as he gets swatted by the door when it swings back in place.  We are trying to get him used to waiting for his turn and then wait for the door to stop swinging.  With him being so under weight he is trying to push it open but the door has magnets and needs a little pressure to overcome the hold they have.  But all in all he is making great strides in his rehabilitation and recovery.

It has only been 5 days.  This morning he actually walked away from a half eaten bowl of food and after a bit he came back and finished his bowl so he is doing great.  For the first few days he could not eat fast enough but not any more.   He is taking his time and things are really working out.

It is so funny to watch when Tigger brings a toy to him and tries to get him to tug the toy with her.  If he is able to get a good hold on the toy she then will start to back up and play with him.  She will try to get him involved by waving her toys in front of him and to have him to take a hold of the toy.  If he does not entirely get a hold of it he will chase after her around the kitchen table.  Tigger is so happy to have a friend in the house.

My wife and I welcome the opportunity to help out in a small way to give at least one of the animals a good home.
Sincerely, Chip

Dogs # 38  59  16  21 (at Living Creatures Animal Sanctuary and can be seen on this page)

Dr. Gish called me back late last night with update on dogs that she took from Adams County. She said the large white one has heartworm and she will start treating for that. She is now walking them on a leash. The dog with the hurt jaw is finally off all meds and was on leash for first time yesterday and is doing well. Wants to make sure all dogs are ok and then start to spay and neuter. She said these dogs are going to need a lot of work but hopefully she will find a good home for them.
Pam

I just wanted to thank CART for all their efforts with saving these dogs.  We got 4 of them. They are all improving.  They are receiving extensive necessary veterinary care and socialization. My computer has been down for about 2 weeks.  Thankfully CART kept our animals on their web site and they were able to get some exposure.

Dogs # 19, 62 and 47 have new names (Wanda, Willy and Wonka) and are awaiting adoption at the League for Animal Welfare- http://www.lfaw.org/adoptions/dog.shtml

My name is Donna and I am the trainer at the League for Animal Welfare.  We rec'd your email and just thought I would give you an update on our 3 dogs that we have from Adams County...

  • Wanda:  doing GREAT!  she is an extremely loving and outgoing little girl!!  She is eating well and having a blast playing with her "brother" Wonka as well as others!  She was spayed and given all her shots... and ready for a patient owner knowing that she will probably get a bit nervous here and there with new sounds and new environment.
  • Willy:  Willy is doing very well!  He was just neutered and doing very well!!  He has one of our "sweet runs" and he is loviiiinnnnnggggg it!!!! He is scheduled to get a "spa day"  later this week!!
  • Wonka:.... save my best for last!!!  I LOVE THIS BOY!  Has tons of potential but will need a patient owner and probably best for both of Wanda and Wonka to either go home together OR with other dogs!  It took a long time for Wonka to come inside (we have indoor/outdoor runs) however with lots of work, patience and some help from Wanda... he is doing AMAZING!  Walking on the leash is coming along but was soooo traumatized the first several days.  But what some love and attention can do!!!  HE IS ADORABLE!

Update on our 4 dogs:
1) the best news is that "Jack" the white lab (#50) went home this past weekend to a new home.  He socialized beautifully and learned to walk on different surfaces and on a lead, and charmed his new parents;

2) #64 - the Bernese mountain dog ("Bernie") is still in foster.  We had a bit of a rocky start, since he is in a house and he was marking the house a bit.  The foster mom and our shelter worked together to come up with strategies to save her house; he is still there.  Bernie is getting along well with her other dog, so our fingers are crossed that this may end up being his home.....????!

3) #33 - "Desmond" is a very handsome boy.  He is still in foster care, but his picture is on the website.  As soon as we have space, he will go into the shelter because his adoption opportunities will increase there.

4) #34 - "Jake" is still with me.  We decided not to post his picture yet, because he has a very bad case of mange - but he is a real doll.  He walks very well on a leash, and clearly has been someone's pet in the past

We've done the full range of baths, Universal Medicated Shampoo, Mitaban dip, etc., etc.  Unfortunately, this week he got a prolapsed rectum and needed surgery to correct that.  It came on VERY quickly; my husband noticed it about 9 pm on Monday night; by 2 am I was in the emergency vet clinic asking for a consult - they did the reduction about 4 am, and his sutures will have to come out in 10-14 days.  When we went for a regular vet assessment on 4/12, they elected not to schedule him for a neuter because his immune system was so weakened.  as soon as he is looking better, we will schedule him, and get his picture on the website.  I love having him - as I said - he is a real doll.  I keep wondering if someone is missing him; he is an Australian Shepherd Mix and he is about 5-6 years old.....  One of the best days this past week was when we were walking in Walhalla Ravine and a passerby said he was "cute" - that made OUR day!

Regards, Chris

Update on Mom and 4 pups that were born in the CART temporary shelter overnight:

I thought I would write and let you know that I met up with Pam in Danville, IL yesterday to transfer the mama dog and pups to the Friends of Noah, WI rescue.  Danville, IL is exactly 1/2 way inbetween Cincinnati and me; and so, it was a great meet up place.

I took the mama and pups that you took from the hoarding case, and they are doing GREAT. I drove them to their new foster home (another one of the volutneers here really wanted to care for them), and I just got off of the phone with her.  She says the mama dog is in HEAVEN....she's absolutely in love with her foster mom, and follows her everywhere.  Then she jumps back in her pen and checks on her babies.  She's a great mama, that's for sure.  They are feeding her the best food and are very experienced foster parents.  They introduced her to the family's 2 golden retrievers, and they are all playing and romping in their fenced in back yard.  This dog is SO happy!  Its amazing she's adjusted so rapidly.  New foster dogs usually take a week or two to adjust, and she's already fitting in after only one day.  The pups are now 3 weeks old and are well socialized and fat and sassy....they are just thriving!

THANK YOU FOR SAVING THIS MAMA DOG and her pups.  You've saved some wonderful dog's lives, and you are making a lot of us humans very, very happy up here.

Always the best,
 Lois

From the foster mom:

Oh my gosh......she is such a goofball! She is getting so much better around people. She wants to just sit on you. Last night we had 5 teenagers down there with her and the puppies along with our dogs and she was out and running around the basement with her tail going 100mph! Our one dog Willy goes down there periodically and checks the pups out.....it's almost like he is counting them to make sure they are all there. Then he lays down in the little fenced in area and relaxes with them. Bob and I took her for a walk in the neighborhood to get her used to being on a leash. She is getting much better with Bob too. His deep voice used to make her nervous but now she comes up to him. She goes up and down the stairs good too. Bob had her on the couch next to him watching tv for a bit last night. It was so cute! He is such a softie, but he'll never admit it. lol
I weighed her this morning and she is tipping the scales at 39 lbs!!!!!!! She realizes now that she is going to be fed and when she is full she leaves her bowl of food to eat later. That is good so she isn't one of those dogs that will just gorge until they throw up.
The puppies are doing great! They are walking around much more and are starting to want to play with each other. I love it when they play growl with their brothers.
Well, I better get heading off to work. I'll keep you posted and send you some updated pictures of her and the babies.
I will be sure to get the puppies over to Lincoln for the kids to see. I'm sure we can bring all 4. I'll have someone help me. After taking care of 13, 4 is a breeze! lol

So far the names are  Bea for mama  and   Andy, Barney, Opie, and Floyd for the boys.

Talk to you soon and thanks again for trusting us with her and her babies!

Mary Ann

Update on #53, now named "Lucky"

Here is our update on dog #53.  We’ve named her Lucky.  She made huge progress in the few weeks and continues to come along.  In her first 24 hours she got her first bath (fleas be gone!), may have taken her first walk on a leash and went to the vet.  We discovered there is another Adams Co dog in West Chester that comes to the Dog O Mat, but we keep missing them.  She slept next to or on top of me the first night during the storm.  She is learning a lot from our other shelter dog, a 6 year old named Dakota.  She is still on antibiotics to clear up the sores that were all over her skin and we’ve added steroids to get her to stop scratching and biting.  Her hair is growing in.  She turned out negative for heartworms and ringworm, hurray!  She got her shots and everyone gave us treats.  She ate half the box at the vet.

She weighed 40 lbs when we got her and they say she needs to gain 15 lbs.  Within 2 weeks she gained 7 lbs!  She does not have a prolapsed rectum, her girl parts are enlarged from having puppies.  The vet will spay her when she is a little stronger physically and emotionally.  She’ll need an impacted tooth pulled out too.   Within a few days she was not protecting her food and shares a dish (hard to keep her out of it) with Dakota now.  She has made friends with our cat, though the cat is still a little in shock due to her size.  We are working on housebreaking, that will be the hardest part.  I think she goes when she is scared and the medicine is not helping.  She is very attached to us already and does not like to be left alone.  She has a pitiful cry.  It took her a week or so to learn to bark, but she found her voice.  She is starting to run in the yard.  We are working on “playing.”  It will be a journey with this one, but she is so sweet, she is worth it.

The League for Animal Welfare just reported that dog #47 was adopted! Yea!

5/15/10: Pets Without Parents, Columbus, OH, about 5 weeks after pickup:
  • Dog #64 ("Bernie") went home this past week; (#50 - "Jack" went home a couple of weeks ago).
  • Dog #33 ("Desmond") will be going into the shelter soon - we've been pretty full with larger dogs.
  • Dog #34 ("Jake") was in the worst shape.  He is still with me, but was deemed well enough to get his neuter surgery this past week.  We are on round 3 of trying to control his mange.  He's better, but not well enough to photograph well.  He'll be with me for a while longer.
Good to hear that some of the other dogs that went to rescues have found adoptive homes; really glad to hear it!  Regards to all, Chris Ramsey.

Here are the latest pictures of the Mom and pups from the Adams County Hoarding case.

They are all doing GREAT....the mama has really come out of her shell, and she is so very healthy.  And you can tell that the pups are eating a lot and growing like weeds.

Thought you would want to see the latest....HAPPY ENDINGS are great, aren't they!?
